5 songs you must hear this week: 20 August 2018

1. Revive the Rose, “Moxie”
Single (Independent)
Recommended If You Like: Monster Truck, Glorious Sons, Sheepdogs

Hailing from Welland, Ontario, this four-year-old five-piece has received some airplay love on several medium and small stations across Ontario. Damn good wrestling video to go with this song, too. They enlisted serious help from Crossfire Wrestling to make it as realistic as possible. Best indie rock video of the year? You decide.

2. Jade Bird, “Uh-Huh”
Something American (Glassnote)
RIYL: Next big things

If you haven’t heard about England’s Jade yet, it’s inevitable you will. Daniel Glass of Glassnote Records (the guy that found Mumford and Sons, Strumbellas and a bunch of other hit-makers) believes she’s the next big thing. He thinks that she has all the goods to make it very, very big. And when you consider she can belt out self-penned songs like this at just 20 years old, you can see why he thinks that way.

3. Bleeker, “James Dean”
Single (Five Seven Music)
RIYL: Jet, Struts, Black Keys

More small-town Ontario rock. Bleeker (formerly Bleeker Ridge 2003-2016) of Orillia, is very much into songs with big melodies. If you follow the Junos, you’ll remember that they were nominated for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2017 for their album, Erase You. This song hints at the direction for their fourth album. Fun fact: their drummer was asked to join Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx in Sixx: A.M.

Listen here.

4. Elle King, “Shame”
TBA (RCA)
RIYL: Vulnerability

Rob Schneider’s daughter has had a rough couple of years thanks largely to a difficult divorce. The “Ex’s and Oh’s” singer says, “It was a very dark, scary and very lonely time. I didn’t know that I was not really in here, that my brain just shut down completely.” There were days she didn’t leave the house. Making this new record kept her sane.

Capital Cities, “Space”
Solarize (Capitol)
RIYL: Two-piece bands like Twenty One Pilots

We first heard about this two-piece LA band in about 2013 when they release a debut album entitled In a Tidal Wave of Mystery. After a tour with Kay Perry and a few other road trips, they started releasing a series of singles in quick succession—five of them, in fact—before this album came out.
