Five song you must hear this week (03 June 2024)

After sorting through close to 600 submissions from the past week, these tracks have emerged victorious as the five songs everyone needs to hear this week.

1. BABYMETAL and Electric Callboy, RATATATA
Single (Century Media)
Recommended If You Like: There is nothing like BABYMETAL

BABYMETAL is the adorable Japanese idol band that mixes J-pop melodies with intense metal. Electric Callboy is an electronicore band from Germany. Together, they’ve created this. No notes. Would listen again. Five stars.

2. Lip Critic, In the Wawa (Convinced I Am God)
Hex Dealer (Partisan Records)
RIYL: Extreme experiments in post-punk

Lip Critic came together a few years back when four university students in New York State found themselves bored with the bands in which they were playing. The result was Lip Critic, a group that has gone to some lengths to be different. Like what? Creating a video game to go along wit a single. Touring with two full drumkits. Playing punk-ish rock with no guitars. Samples of squealing pigs. Intrigued? You should be.

3. Vampires Everywhere!, White Wedding
Single (Dark Kingdom Records)
RIYL: Cool covers

Damn. I missed National Goth Day (May 22 in the US). Had I been reminded (damn you, Outlook Calendar!), I would have baked a cake while listening to this spooky, slowed-down re-interpretation of Billy Idol’s White Wedding that Hollywood’s Vampires Everywhere! had released for the occasion. It’s in my calendar for next year. Meanwhile, check out the song which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Nine Inch Nails album.

4. Body Count, Psychopath feat. Joe Bad
Merciless (Century Media)
RIYL: Ice-T metal

It’s been 33 years since I first got into Body Count, thanks to their appearance on the very first Lollapalooza tour. A lot has happened with Ice-T since then—he’s made more as an actor than he ever has a musician—but he still hasn’t lost his love of metal. He’s also still working with guitarist Ernie C who can riff with the best. A new album is promised for sometime later this year.

5. The Royal Foundry, Famous
Single (Fontana North)
RIYL: F-bombs, but in a nice way

With this song, The Royal Foundry (Edmonton’s Jared Salte and Beth Schumacher) wonder what it would be like to wake up and find out that you were suddenly famous and had everything you’d ever dreamed for. “Wake me when I’m famous.” I think we can all relate.
