Throwback Thursday: Silverchair and Tomorrow (1994)

From late 1991 until early 1995, grunge and grunge-adjacent music ruled alt-rock radio. Anything with a drop-D guitar tuning was guaranteed to get at least a quick listen. Silverchair, a bunch of teenagers from Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, was sucked into this maelstrom shortly after winning a demo competition staged by Triple J, the country’s national alt-rock station. A re-recording of Tomorrow appeared on their debut record called Frogstomp.

If I’m honest, the lyrics are a little dumb, but singer Daniel Johns can explain himself. Inspiration came from a TV show about a poor person taking a rich guy through a hotel to point out how there were so many people worse off than he would ever be. The rich dude wants out but the poor guy says he was to wait until tomorrow to leave the hotel.
