Five Songs You Must Hear This Week: 24 June 2024

Now that we’re firmly into summer, it’s time for some loud songs. That’s what the Five Songs You Must Hear This Week is here to deliver.

1. The Pixies, You’re So Impatient
Single (BMG)
Recommended If You Like: Well, it’s The Pixies, innit?

The Pixies recently released their first two music in two years with a double single led by this track which they describe as “an explosive two-minute, nine-second Zombie attack at the mall” and “a macabre and cinematic picture of American pop culture.” The other song is Que Sera Sera. Yes, the Doris Day song from the 50s. This is exactly why we love The Pixies.

2. FIDLAR, Fix Me
Surviving the Dream (Dine Alone)
RIYL: Proper Cali punk

FIDLAR is, hands down, my favourite punk band of the last ten years. I was worried about them because they were going on five years since their previous album. But that hiatus will be over on September 20 with a 13-track slice of irreverent surf-punk that also shows that the band has grown up. Hey, it happens to all of us. If you’re in the Toronto area, they’ve got a gig at The Phoenix on October 8. Don’t miss it.

3. Skating Polly, Camelot
Single (El Camino Records)
RIYL: The Beaches, NOBROS, Les Shirley

This is hardly a new song—it came out in 2018(!!!)—but I somehow missed it entirely until a faithful listener sent me this video. Skating Polly is three women from Oklahoma City who can show the boys a thing or two about how to rock. I’m now in the process of getting caught up on the band’s six albums and two EPs. LOVE this stuff! Hey, if it’s new to you it’s still new, right?

4. Jackie, Perfume
Lucky Love EP (Independent)
RIYL: Guitar-driven ear candy

Not a person but a trio from Toronto (although the group features a Winnipeg guitarist named Jackie Mohr who also has also toured in Hawksley Workman’s band)who has a new EP produced by Sam Jackson Willows, a guy who has worked with The Beaches and Ruby Waters. He was also the vocal engineer for a ton of Justin Bieber songs. Fun fact: Jackie was also in a band called VAG HALEN .

5. Royal Castles, Stage Fright
Singles Night EP (Ourness)
RIYL: Garage rock-tinted power Trios

Here are three guys from Guelph in a group that feature members of Cuff The Duke. The producer is Zane Whitfield who has done records with both The Glorious Sons and Blue Stones. Don’t like your boss who rules through fear? This is your song.
