Five Songs You Must Hear This Week: 08 July 2024

Two of this week’s selections of Five Songs You Must Hear This Week are already on high rotation in my car. I’ll let you guess which ones.

1. Amyl and the Sniffers, U Should Not Be Doing That
Single (Rough Trade)
Recommended If You Like: Sheer panic

As far as I’m concerned, Amyl and the Sniffers are one of the most exciting bands to come out of Australia in a while. There are two albums already with a third on the way. If the opening bass line of this track doesn’t get you right away, you may have to turn in your rock card. It looks like the video was shot on a phone, too. Who needs a big crew anymore?

2. Hotel Mira, King the World
I Am Not Myself (Frontside)
RIYL: Canadian indie rock

Vancouver’s Hotel Mira (ne JPNSGRLS) has just come off a 19-date Canadian tour in support of their third album under their new name. The tour saw a bunch of sellout performances, showing that there’s still a lot of life left in this 2023 album.

3. Manners Manners, Yr Well
I Held Their Eyes, I Kissed Them All (El Camino Records)
RIYL: 90s-style slacker rock

The trio Manners Manners has been playing in and around Baltimore for at least a decade and is finally ready to release a debut album on July 26. This single is about a queer person being invisible to the media. Great chorus, too.

4. Artemas, I Like the Way You Kiss Me
Single (10K Projects)
RIYL: Early 80s techno-pop

Artemas Diamandis is from Oxfordshire, England and was inspired to start writing songs at the age of 16 after he saw the documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. However, the sound of this single is a million miles away from anything resembling grunge. In fact, the pulse-y keyboard may remind you of some early 80s singles by acts like Missing Persons and Kim Wilde.

5. COIN, Strawberry Jam
I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore (Ourness)
RIYL: Harmonicas?

COIN, the three-piece band from Nashville, has had a good run over the last few years, especially with their 2020 album, Uncanny Valley. They’ll return with a sixth album this fall, which is being introduced with this single. It’s the first song they wrote after a year of writing nothing. Hey, creative breakthroughs can be few and far between.
