Listen up, kids. Before grunge hit in the early 90s, some of us alt-rock oldsters became enamored with medieval chants by Gregorian monks. Seriously. Something from the 14th century was suddenly alternative.
One example was Enigma, a studio group led by a Romanian-German producer named Michael Cretu. A 1990 debut album called MCMXC_a.D. started at alternative radio but then exploded into a massive cross-format hit.
By the way, some monks sued for copyright infringement over this big single. The case was settled when Cretu cut them in on the profits.
