We’re about to enter the dog days of summer, but believe it or not, it’s time to set up some albums for the fall already. That’s the point of some of these singles.
1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Frogs
Wild God (Play It Again Sam)
Recommended If You Like: Glorious Gloom
If you’re feeling in the mood for a little Biblical gloom, Nick has delivered something that begins with an account of the human race’s first murder (“Ushering in the week he knelt down and crushed his brother’s head in with a bone/It’s my great privilege to walk you home”) It only gets darker from there. This is a taste of The Bad Seeds’ 18th album which will arrive on August 30.
2. Tom Morello and Roman Morello, Soldier in the Army of Love
Single (Mom + Pop)
RIYL: Father-son collaborations
Tom Morello is one of the most famous alt-rock guitarists of the last thirty years, but he claims that his son Roman is a true guitar wizard. Tom says that during the pandemic, his kid spent eight hours a day practicing. The two collaborated on this single which will appear on Tom’s next solo album which is due later this year. And the shredding in this song? That’s Roman.
3. Dog Race, The Leader
Single (Fascination Street Recrods)
RIYL: Icy, gothy stuff
We don’t know all that much about Dog Race, a group that created a following by performing mysterious last-second DIY gigs throughout London. And when was the last time you saw a music video where the lead singer is buried alive?
4. Bif Naked, Champion
Champion (Herroyalmajestys)
RIYL: Comebacks
It’s been fifteen years since the last full Bif Naked album, so this return is very welcome. She’s recently married (her husband is named Snake) and has recovered from those myriad of health problems over the last couple of decades. This is the fourth of three advance singles. Great to have her back.
5. Bloc Party, Flirting Again
Single (Infectious/BMG)
RIYL: A little self-deprecation
Following an appearance at Glastonbury, Bloc Party is ready to jump back into the recording game starting with this non-album single, their first bit of new material in a couple of years. It’s a dance-punk thing that may induce a little anxiety, especially if you’re awful at flirting.
