New Music Friday: 10 releases for a July weekend (19 July 2024)

It’s about that time when the recorded music industry takes a bit of a breath before diving into all the fourth-quarter releases. We’ve been hearing about albums for the fall for a few weeks now, but expect more news shortly. Meanwhile, we have these New Music Friday releases to contend with. Lots of cool singles this week.

Singles

1. The Beaches, Takes One to Know One (The Beaches/AWAL)

Fresh off securing a spot on the Short List for the 2024 Polaris Music Prize, The Beaches have a new single to introduce as part of a sold-out headlining tour of North America. That also included an opening set for the Rolling Stones in California back on July 17 and will include a giant hometown show in front of at least 16,000 people at the Budweiser Stage in Toronto on August 22. They just keep getting better.

2. bby, Kinky (Glassnote Records)

As this five-piece from East London continues to build a worldwide fanbase–their underground/social media cred is wild–they’re touring the continent all summer. Is this their North American breakout song? We’ll see. Watch the video and you’ll see footage of their infamous “hangs” at their HQ. It’s nice to see more guitar-based stuff doing well, innit?

3. Fever333, Higher Power (Roadrunner)

If you’re at all into Rage Agains the Machine’s headspace, you’ve probably already discovered this LA band. There’s a lot of punk rock, post-hardcore, and hip-hop in what they do. And yes, they tend to be rather political. Looking for some socially-conscious anger? Here you go.

4. FIDLAR, Down N Out (Dine Alone)

Still in SoCal comes another single from my favourite punk band of the last ten years. FIDLAR, a trio that doesn’t mess around, has a new preview of their upcoming fourth album, Surviving the Dream (due September 20) with a new single entitled Down N Out. This one is sort of surfy and is fun in a self-deprecating sort of way. I’m all in.\

5. Jain, Nobody Knows (Columbia)

Interesting story, this. Jain (Jeanne Louise Galice)was born in Toulouse, France, raised in Dubai, Brazzaville (in the Congo), and Abu Dhabi, and then enrolled in art school in Paris. She’s accomplished in everything from Arabic percussion to music programming. She’s since sold about 1.5 million albums worldwide and has performed at Coachella and the FIFA Women’s World Cup. She’s especially big here in Canada. This new single should help.

6. The Linda Lindas, All In My Head (Epitaph)

The cute kids (all women, all teenagers) continue to wow people. A new album entitled No Obligation will be here on October 11. From what I hear, it’s excellent, too. The girls are honing their live chops all summer opening for Green Day. How’s that for living the dreams?

7. Sublime feat. Bradley Nowell, Feel Like That (Frontside)

How’s this for a full circle? Original Sublime lead singer Bradley Nowell died of a drug overdose in a San Francisco hotel room in May 1996. Now his son Jakob–who was less than a year old when Bradley died–has taken over vocals in his dad’s band. This song features both Jakob’s vocals and archived tracks from Dad.

Albums

1. Boy Golden, For Eden (Six Shooter)

Our boy from Winnipeg continues to bounce between genres with his second album. After getting his initial boost in the alt-rock world, he seems to have dipped deeper into country, so we’ll see where this goes.

2. Deep Purple, =1, (earMUSIC)

Yep, the band from London formed in 1968 and responsible for Smoke on the Water. This is their twenty-third studio album (32nd overall) and fifth in a row produced by Canadian Bob Ezrin (aged 75). Ian Paice (76) is still on drums. Roger Glover (78) is still playing bass. And Ian Gillian (78) is your singer. They’re on tour with Yes.

3. Glass Animals, I Love You So F***ing Much (Republic)

The British four-piece is hoping to capitalize on Heat Waves (a smash hit single during the pandemic era and the biggest single by a British band in something like 30 years). A title like that will hamper things at radio, but the streaming world should have no problem with it.
