One of the cool things about an algorithm is it sometimes throws something at you that you’d completely forgotten and hadn’t heard for years. That’s what happened to me Marvelous 3 and Freak of the Week.
The Atlanta trio popped up right at the end of the 90s when alt-rock radio was awash in one-hit-wonders as labels, unsure of where rock was headed, threw everything at the wall. Marvelous 3’s big record (Hey! Album!) got them on tours with Train, Collective Soul, and a few others. There was a break-up in 2001 but a 2018 reunion seems to be sticking.
Listening to the song led me down a rabbit hole. While singer Butch Walker has also carved out a solo career, he’s also a sought-after songwriter. He’s penned and/or produced songs for Weezer, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Avril Lavigne, Green Day, Adam Lambert, Pink, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, and Taylor Swift. He’s doing fine.
