Five Songs You Must Hear This Week (19 Aug 2024)

As we barrel towards the end of August, there’s no getting around it; summer days are numbered. Here’s this week’s Five Songs You Must Hear list. Hopefully, these tracks will distract you from the inevitable just a bit.

1. Freeze the Fall, One Left Standing
Thrones EP (Independent)
Recommended If You Like: Assurances that the future of rock is fine

Is Freeze the Fall Canada’s answer to The Linda Lindas? They just might be. No one in this trio from Kelowna is older than 17; the youngest is 15. Their debut EP—made with $10,000 fun from a Kickstarter campaign, with 80% coming from outside Canada—gives us an idea of what the future of Canadian rock may look like. Remember them.

2. Miina, Hiccup feat. Lowell
Slow Motion EP (Independent)
RIYL: Smooth alt-pop

Miina (est. Victoria, BC) was once known as Carmanah. They’ve teamed with Lowell, a songwriter who has collaborated on songs for Beyoncé, The Beaches, Tate McRae, and a few others. This debut EP was produced by Gus Van Go who has worked with both The Beaches and Metric.

3. Finger Eleven, Adrenaline
Single (Better Noise Music)
RIYL: Well, it’s Finger Eleven, innit?

Fresh from crossing the one billion streams mark, Finger Eleven is currently touring with Creed, Finger Eleven is prepping for something more in early 2025 with a new album. That will be the first full record of new material from the band since Five Crooked Lines in 2015. An official music video is coming later this month.

4. Nixon Boyd, Every Time We Turn a Corner
Single (Independent)
RIYL: Hollerado, obviously

Hollerado fans will know Nixon as the band’s lead guitarist and key songwriter along with Menno Versteeg. Given that Hollerado is winding down for good, this gives Nixon a chance to try a few things on his own. This song features him playing everything except drums. The puppetry comes from members of the cast of Labyrinth and Fraggle Rock. He had more material, but someone broke into his car and took all his hard drives which featured oodles of recorded material.

5. Local H, P.J. Soles
Whatever Happened to P.J. Soles? (Reissue) (Studio E Records)
RIYL: Mulligans

This song is not exactly new; in fact, it’s more than 20 years old. But since Chicago’s Local H is reissuing this album as a 20th-anniversary release with a remixed version of this song, it’s fair game as (as the band says) a “coulda shoulda single.” And it does raise a good point. Where is P.J. Soles? She was in Halloween, played Riff Randall in Rock N Roll High School, and Bill Murray’s girlfriend in Stripes. Fun fact: She continued to act. Watch for her as a medical examiner in an upcoming film called 13 Girls.
