New Music Friday: 6 tracks for the last regular weekend of the summer (23 Aug 2024)

There’s no getting around it. Summer is ticking down towards fall, which means it’s almost time for New Music Friday to get serious about new releases for Q3 and Q4. But before that, we have a few more weeks of summer stuff. Not a lot–it’s that time of year–but there’s some good material here.

Singles

1. Amyl and the Sniffers, Chewing Gum (B2B Records/Virgin)

One of my favourite bands to come out of Australia in the last few years is Amyl and the Sniffers, a super-fierce female-fronted band that plays what the Aussies call “pub rock.” They’ve just announced a third album, Cartoon Darkness, which was recorded at the Foo Fighters’ 606 Studios in Van Nuys, California, and is due October 25. This single gives us a taste of the themes found on the new album, including war, AI, volatile politics, the climate crisis, and all our online obsessions.

2. Geordie Greep, Holy Holy (Rough Trade)

Let’s get into the weeds of British indie. Geordie was the frontman for Black Midi, a band that was part of something known as the Windmill scene, which was centered around a Brixton pub of the same name. If you’re looking for something on the experimental side this weekend, try this track from his first solo album, The New Sound.

3. Raz Hayder, Glass Houses (Voracious Records)

Raz is a Toronto rapper, singer/songwriter, and producer seeking to blend alt-rock with what he calls “stadium hip-hop.” He’s spent 12 years working on this sound, collaborating with a number of people along the way including Cat Stevens.

Albums

1. The Sheepdogs, Paradise Alone (Right On Records)

The Sheepdogs had a multi-year run on a major label, but that’s now come to an end. The good news, though, is that they were able to buy back their catalogue and form their own indie label. Their first release under this new arrangement is a surprise EP. This is the official single.

2. Fontaines DC, Romance (XL Recordings)

Another record–their four–from one of the best bands from Dublin in ages. Each album has displayed growth, maturity, and some excellent music. Maybe they’ll get nominated for another Grammy with this one.

3. Illuminati Hotties, POWER (Hopeless Records)

C’mon, you gotta love that name, right? This is a four-piece from LA who lean slightly punk who are now up until their third album. The frontperson is Sarah Tudzin, a Grammy-winning producer. This one will take you back to sometime around 1993.

Cassyette, This World F*****g Sucks (23 Recordings)

Cassyette (Cassy Brooking on her drivers license) is a singer-songwriter from Essex described by Kerrang magazine as a “modern alternative icon.” She’s toured with Sum 41, My Chemical Roman, Frank Carter, and Bring Me the Horizon. And with an album title like that, you gotta be curious, right?
