This week’s Five Songs You Must Hear list includes a cover by Eddie Vedder, a remix from Bush, and a guest appearance by Weird Al.
1. The Linda Lindas, Yo Me Estreso feat. Weird Al
No Obligations (Epitaph)
Recommended If You Like: Weird collaborations
The Linda Lindas are the young moppets from LA who have carved out quite the reputations despite (a) none of them being old enough to order a beer, (b) a couple of them are too young for a driver’s license, and (c) having to writer all their songs after school and while on holidays. Their latest release ahead of their second album, due on October 11. This is the fourth advance single from that album. Nice job snagging Weird Al for this one.
2. Eddie Vedder, Room at the Top
Single (Water Tower Music)
RIYL: Tom Petty covers
Fresh off a wonderful cover of The English Beat’s Save It For Later which appeared in an episode of The Bear, Eddie has released one of his favourite Tom Petty songs, a track from Petty’s 1999 album, Echo. This track has been part of Eddie’s solo gigs for a while. Listen for it as part of the soundtrack for Bad Monkey, a much-hyped new song on Apple TV+. The recording features backing from Chad Smith, Josh Klinghoffer, Benmont Tench of Petty’s band, and more.
3. Bush, Swallowed (GLU Remix)
Loads of Remixes (BMG)
RIYL: Old-school rock remixes
There was a time back in the 90s when tons of bands, led by Nine Inch Nails and the Cure, would release albums filled with redux mixes of familiar songs. Gavin Rossdale has the same notion for seven Bush tracks from back in the day, including this track from 1996’s Razborblade Suitcase. This one is courtesy Michael Shuman from Queens of the Stone Age.
4. House of Protection, Pulling Teeth
Galore EP (Red Bull Records)
RIYL: Hollerado, obviously
Drummer Aric Improta and guitarist Stephen Harrison used to be in Fever 333 but have now moved on to this new project. This debut single ticks boxes for everyone who loves bands like Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, and Bring Me the Horizon. Come for the music when the EP appears on September 13 then stay for the Wall of Death.
5. Seether, Judas Mind
The Surface Seems So Far (Fantasy Records)
RIYL: Grunge 90s-style rock
South Africa’s biggest rock export is ready with their ninth album (due September 2). Damn, singer Shaun Morgan still has that same YRAAWWWL in his voice that Kurt Cobain had. This will be the band’s first album in about four years.
