Five Songs You Must Hear This Week (16 Sept 2024)

This week’s Five Songs You Must Hear list starts off looking like something that might have been written in 2004. Nope. It’s still 2024.

1. Primal Scream, Deep Dark Waters
Come Ahead (BMG)
Recommended If You Like: Well, it’s Primal Scream, innit?

Here’s a preview of Primal Scream’s 12th album, which is their first full-length release in about eight years. It’s pretty dark; lyrics include “All systems are failing” and “We go like cattle to the slaughter,” so don’t look for it to cheer you up. Frontman Bobbie Gillespie is a fan of Franco Berdardi, the man who wrote “Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.”

2. Manic Street Preachers, Decline & Fall
Single (Sony)
RIYL: Well, it’s the Manics, innit?

The Welsh exports have bestowed us with “a joyous anthem for an era of self-hatred.” They’re a fan of something called “managed decline,” too. But despite that description, this is a pretty fun track thanks to the pump-your-first-in-the-air major key-ness of it all.

3. Jet, Hurry Hurry
Single (Impressed Recordings)
RIYL: Well, it’s Jet, innit?

The Australian behind songs like Are You Gonna Be My Girl are back with their first single since 2009. The occasion is the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Get Born, which they’ve been touring behind for the last few months. A new album is promised sometime soon.

4. The Damn Truth, Love Outta Luck
Single (Spectra Musique)
RIYL: Whatever is happening in Montreal right now

And something is definitely happening there with lots of cool hard rock coming out of the city. The Damn Truth, a four-piece that has toured with The Sheepdogs, Glorious Sons, and ZZ Top both domestically and internationally, got Bob Rock to produce their forthcoming album. Cool video, too. I wonder how many bands can relate to that particular premise?

5. Spiritbox, Soft Spine
Single (Pale Chord/Rise Records)
RIYL: Stuff that will cave your ears in

Unless you’re really plugged into the metal scene, you may not realize that Victoria, BC’s Spiritbox is one of the hottest groups in the world right now. They were named Best International Arits at the 2024 Heavy Music Awards and are now touring with Korn and Gojira. This track will do well with the Alexisonfire set. Bet on them to really explode over the next 12 months.
