How was the first weekend of fall for you? Did you get your fill of pumpkin spice latte? Thinking about Thanksgiving? Need to buy Halloween candy? Then you’re probably doing errands. The Five Songs You Must Hear This Week will help you power through all that.
1. Weathers, Wasn’t Gonna Go Out
Single (Sumerian)
Recommended If You Like: Angsty love songs
Stuck at home on a weekend because you’re feeling miserable? Then this song from an LA band with too many members named Cameron might be the song for you, especially if you’ve recently undergone a bad break-up. Maybe it’s time to summon some emotional strength, take back your life, and reclaim what’s yours. Whether you go with the heavy eye makeup is up to you.
2. The Ramona Flowers, Dangerous
Single (Distiller)
RIYL: Scott Pilgrim fans, obvs
Yes, their name comes from the teleporting character in the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. They’re from Bristol, England, and were picked to help launch Dyson’s new OnTrac headphones earlier this year. They want you to know that this song is about “dancing with danger.” Be careful out there.
3. DEADLETTER, More Heat!
Hysterical Strength (SO Recordings)
RIYL: Arty post-punk
Saxophones aren’t exactly the most common thing in music today, but they’re part of the vision of Cameron Miller, the head of the British musical collective that is DEADLETTER. They’re currently working on a debut album that was produced by Jim Abbiss, a guy known for his work with Arctic Monkeys and Adele. This sounds interesting.
4. Miina, Hiccup
Slow Motion EP (Independent)
RIYL: Whatever is going on in Victoria
Two things are going on here. First, Lowell (ne Carmanah) is a band from Victoria, BC. Second, the featured singer is a woman named Lowell who has collaborated on songs for Beyonce, The Beaches, Tate McCrae, and others. The result is a song that combines the best of both.
5. Or:la, Chant
Trusting Theta (Fabric Originals)
RIYL: And now for something completely different
I’ll be honest: I only noticed this song because of the unusual, stylized spelling of “Or:la” (real name: Orlagh Dooley) It turns out she’s a DJ and producer from Northern Ireland who lives on a diet of 90s techno, garage, UK bass, tribal house, deep house, breakbeat, and acid. Topics for her album include female rage to the criminalization of pepper spray. How’s that for a song topic?
