Throwback Thursday: Soul Coughing and Screenwriter's Blues (1994)

Soul Coughing was an example of how wide the alt-rock net got cast in the middle 1990s as grunge was starting to slip but before the punk rock revival really kicked in. It really was a very narrow window. What would be the next big sound? Could be it be stream-of-consciousness poetry? Not rap, but certainly something related. This is where Soul Coughing came in.

Led by Mike Doughty, the four-piece NYC band could rock, groove, and get jazzy while sometimes using samples. There’s definitely some hip-hop here along with some experimental noise rock. Doughty called what they did “deep slacker jazz.” I’ve had this song on my portable music devices for years. It’s especially impactful in the car at around four in the morning.
