With the nights longer and the weather cooler, this week’s Five Songs You Must Hear list will make for some cozy evening listening.
1. Mother Mother, Oh Ana
Mother EP (Last Gang)
Recommended If You Like: Going deep into the archives
Before they were known as Mother Mother, the band was known as just plain Mother. They released a self-titled six-track EP. A few of them were re-recorded and/or re-released on the group’s Touch Up album. Now they’ve gone back into the vaults and dusted off the files for that debut EP. Four of the songs didn’t make it onto Touch Up and two were re-recorded. This is the first time the original versions have been made available digitally.
2. Serj Tankian, Cartoon Buyer
Foundations EP (Gibson Records)
RIYL: System of a Down, obviously
As of today (October 21, 2024), it has been 18 years, 10 months, and 30 days since the last System of a Down album. If you’re still hoping for a follow-up to Hypnotize, keep hoping. You are the definition of an optimist. Meanwhile, frontman Serj Tankian has a new EP that will have to do. And it’ll do fine.
3. Japandroids, All Bets Are Off
Fate & Alcohol (Anti-)
RIYL: Long goodbyes
We’ve known for some time that Brian King and David Prowse are bringing Japandroids to an end after 22 years. This fourth album is their latest. Here’s what Brian King has to say: “On our last record we wanted to broaden the definition of a Japandroids song, and purposely left our demos quite open and malleable so that we had more flexibility to experiment in the studio. At the time, this approach was new and exciting, and inspired us to be bolder, to take more chances. We were aiming for a more cinematic take on our signature sound.”
4. Tears for Fears, The Girl That I Call Home
Songs for a Nervous Planet (Concord Records)
RIYL: Well, it’s TfF, innit?
Tears for Fears has been a going concern for 1981, although many of those years were without co-founder Curt Smith. He and Roland Orzabal reunited about 24 years ago and have worked together as TfF ever since. Their latest project is the duo’s first-ever live album (due October 24) and concert film (screenings October 24 and 26 on over 1,100 theatre). This studio recording is the album’s official single.
5. Charlie Houston, Pink Cheetah Print Slip
Single (Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: Certain types of British indie
The first thing I thought of when I heard this song was “Hey! That’s the same vibe as Chaise Longue by Wet Leg!” That’s a compliment, by the way. Charlie already has a couple of EPs, about 15 million global streams and plenty of awesome reviews from Rolling Stone and Spin. Did I mention she’s from Toronto?
