Many bands have set records for being the loudest in concert. Blue Cheer, the first band to ever use Marshall amps onstage, was the first to claim the record.
Deep Purple, The Whole, Motorhead, Manowar, Leftfield, Gallows, and even KISS have at one time or another been crowned “the loudest band in the world” with sound pressure levels over 136 decibels. That’s louder than a jet and into the region where pain begins. But try to imagine this.
On August 27, 1883, the Krakatoa volcano erupted in Indonesia. The explosion was heard 5,000 kilometers away and ruptured the eardrums of people at a distance of 60 kilometers. Scientists have estimated that the volume of this eruption was 310 decibels, making it the loudest sound humans have ever heard.
