Throwback Thursday: China Crisis and Working with Fire and Steel (1983)

I remember standing side stage at a China Crisis show sometime in the late 80s–I’m pretty sure it was at the now-defunct Kingswood Music Theatre at Canada’s Wonderland–watching the drummer play the rhythm parts to this song live (I think it was Waterboys drummer Kevin Wilkinson). I was stunned because I’d been under the impression that the drums were programmed for Working with Fire and Steel.

Nope. It’s some of the most delicate and precise playing I’d ever witnessed. The song itself is one of the most beautifully produced and mixed songs of the New Wave era. And you gotta love a band with an oboe player, right?
