Ongoing History Daily: Strange vinyl variants, part 2

This week, we’re looking at different sorts of records some people want to collect.

In 2014, Ray Parker Jr. and Run-DMC released a scratch-and-sniff version of “Ghostbusters.” As the stylus runs through the grooves, it releases the distinct smell of Stay Puft marshmallows.

If we go back to 2018, Australia’s King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard, their Polygondwanaland album came with a gold inlay and a battery-powered LED strip that creates some cool flashing light effects. A doom metal band called Dopesmoker has a 2022 record that features actual cannabis leaves pressed into it. Expect to pay at least $500 for a copy.

And finally, we have a 2014 edition of the Friday the 13th soundtrack by composer Harry Manfredini. The vinyl is filled with fake blood. Collectors have been known to pay up to $2500 for a copy.

More next time.
