We’re reaching way back to 1971 for Throwback Thursday this week for a powerful spoken word piece by Gil Scott-Heron that’s sort of satirical but also deadly serious. It comes from a time when song of Black Liberation were everywhere as the American civil rights movement continued to do its important work. And if you squint slightly, you can hear the foundations of modern hip-hop in this performance.
It’s also worth going through this list of characters and cultural references in the poem if you’re going to get the most out of it. Think of it as a modern history lesson.
