Throwback Thursday: Liam Lynch and The United States of Whatever (2003)

This was a weird song then and it’s a weird one now. Liam Lynch (actually William Patrick Niederst) was born in Virginia but by 1998 found himself studying in Liverpool where he became involved in an MTV puppet show called The Sifl and Olly Show. By 2003, he was a music consultant on the Jack Black movie School of Rock and burning through a series of other projects.

In the midst of all that, he released an album entitled Fake Songs (his second of at least 15 albums) that included this track that had people laughing worldwide. Critics weren’t laughing because they were heaping praise on the song for its satirical look at youth culture. Paul McCartney was a fan, too.
