Ongoing History Daily: What is "webcore?"

Modern music is always fracturing, segmenting, mutating, and evolving, which is why every week brings a new genre of some kind. For example, there’s a scene called “webcore.”

This is a sound that incorporates influences from the last 30 years of obsolete internet and computer technology combined with whatever is happening now. It’s technology meets nostalgia meets music. Meaning what, exactly?

Old Flash animation. Motorola and Nokia phone sounds. Notifications from Windows XP, older electronica and EDM, and noises made by old-school video games and consoles. The music is often very stripped down and simple, reminiscent of a more innocent time when we first ventured into cyberspace.

Webcore is worth investigating if you yearn for the days of MySpace and GeoCities websites.
