The original riot grrrl scene of the early 90s was a direct response to the testosterone-heavy dude-led grunge and hardcore scene. One of the leaders of that movement was Bikini Kill, based out of Olympia, Washington, a real Ground Zero for the sound.
One of their best song was Rebel Girl from 1993. It was unusual in that it was track two on the first side of a 7-inch single. Produced by Joan Jett, it’s every bit as powerful today as it was back in the day. One of the greatest feminist punk rock anthems of all time.
