Sorry the late posting of this week’s New Music Friday, but I was traveling. But better late than never.
Singles
1. David Byrne, Everybody Laughs (Matador)
Last week, we were hoping that we were about to get a Talking Heads reunion. Instead, we have news of a new David Byrne album entitled Who is the Sky?, which is intended to be taken as a sequel to American Utopia. Guests will include St. Vincent and Hayley Williams. He says this upcoming album is “a chance for everyone to be the mythical creature we all harbour inside.” We’ll find out more September 5.
2. Biffy Clyro, A Little Love (Warner)
The Scottish band hasn’t released anything since 2020. Then again, they released a dual album project (A Celebration of Endings followed by The Myth of Happily Ever After), they were entitled to take a little more time before the next album. A new record is in the works for a release later this year, but for now, all we know about it is this single.
3. Mantra of the Cosmos, Domino Bones (Gets Dangerous) (Independent)
This is interesting: a one-shot-only British supergroup featuring Noel Gallagher, Shawn Ryder and Bez from The Happy Mondays), Andy Bell (Ride, Oasis(, and Zak Starkey (Oasis, The Who). The group played a couple of shows at the Cavern Club in Liverpool where this song was sold as a limited-edition 7-inch single. As you can probably tell from the title, it contains a bit of “cosmic jibber-jabber” (Noel’s words). The name comes from Bez’s first band. The video is an acid trip.
4. Muse, Unravelling (Warner)
I was just thinking the other day, “Gee, it’s been a while since we’ve heard from Muse. It’s been, what, three years?” And then a day later, the band started teasing a new single. This track isn’t out yet—I know that it’s a New Music Friday cheat—but they did play it live for the first time in Helsinki on Thursday night (June 12).
5. Suede, Trance State (BMG)
Like it or not, we have to talk about fall releases, Suede dropped another single for their forthcoming album, Anti-depressants, which will arrive September 5. Like the title suggests, the whole album is themed around mental health struggles. Given the state of the planet right now., this could be the record we need right now.
Albums
1. The Bug Club, Very Human Features (Sub Pop)
If you’re deep into the music of the UK, you’ll have come across The Bug Club, and indie-rock trio from the Cardiff area featuring a couple of brothers and a high-school friend. This is their fourth album and second for Sub Pop.
3. Fallujah, Xenotaph (Nuclear Blast)
If you have some aggression that needs releasing, this new record from the Bay Area tech death metal band might be what you need. This is their sixth album. Blast beats, anyone?
4. The Ting Tings, Home (Wonderful Records)
You mean the band with Jules De Martino and Katie White from about 20 years ago that had a couple of fun indie-pop hits and then disappeared? Yes. Well, that’s actually not true. This is their fifth album but their first since 2018.
5. Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts, Talkin’ to the Trees (Reprise)
With the way things are going around the world these days, a raging Neil Young is exactly what we need. He’s got a new-ish band together for his 46th proper studio album. This single is Neil’s exhortation to the auto industry to get its act together.
