Ongoing History Daily: Strumbellas facts

The Strumbellas have become one of the big breakout stories around the world in 2016, but how much do you know about them? First, they’re from Lindsay, Ontario, population 20,000. Second, everyone in the band met through ads on Craigslist and MySpace placed by songwriter Simon Ward back in 2008. Of the 15 people who responded, six stuck. T heir first release was a self-titled EP in 2009 followed by a debut record called My Father and the Hunter in 2012 and a second entitled We Still Move on Dance Floors about a year later. But it was their third album, Hope, that turned them into a monster after they were discovered by Daniel Glass, the head of Glassnote Records, home to Mumford & Sons, CHVRCHES and Two Door Cinema Club. That’s when things blew up with their song “Spirits” getting more than 50 million Spotify plays, 18 million video views and thousands of spins on the radio. Proof that perseverance can pay off.
