Five Songs You Must Hear This Week (14 July 2025)

This week’s Five Songs You Must Hear was culled from about 550 pitches that include a new spin on a Bob Marley tune from 1980 along with the first 2026 album announcement. Yeah, we’re already going there.

1. Wolf Alice, The Sofa
The Clearing (RCA)
Recommended If You Like: Piano power ballads

Wolf Alice hasn’t released an album in about four years, so it’s nice to hear that they’ll be back with their fourth studio record on August 29. They’re on a new label now, which may or may not affect the ultimate sound of the new record. At the moment, we’re told to expect something “close to Fleetwood Mac.”

2. Cast, Poison Vine
Yeah Yeah Yeah (Scruff of the Neck Records)
RIYL: The Britpop revival

When Oasis announced their reunion tour, there was a lot of speculation about who the opening acts would be. The winners were Richard Ashcroft and Cast, who start the night. I’m sorry to say that we’re already talking about 2026 releases. The single is out now to coincide with the Oasis gig, but the full album won’t be here until January 30.

3. Grandson, Self-Immolation
Single (Fueled by Ramen)
RIYL: Supporting Palestine

I’ll just quote grandson here: “Self Immolation was inspired by the Palestinian liberation movement across college campuses, inspired by the late Aaron Bushnell who gave his life in protest of the actions of the very military he served, inspired by the dead students of Kent State 1970, and written about what it means to have a cause to live for, to die for.”

4. Geese, Taxes
Getting Killed (Partisan)
RIYL: Interesting intros

Brooklyn’s Geese will release their third album this fall, promising a lot of post-punk experiences. Case in point: This video, which begins in a disarmingly lo-fi space before expanding into something full and rich. The tribal drummer is just the start.

5. Bob Marley, Could You Be Loved (with LP Giobbi)
Single (Island/UMe)_
RIYL: Yes, him.

Bob Marley has been gone since May 1981, but he’s never been bigger. Had he beaten cancer, he would have turned 80 this year. In honour of that, his family has issued a new version of this 1980 tack featuring the remixing style of LP Giobbi. Fun fact: One-quarter of all reggae listened to in the United States is to Bob Marley.
