Throwback Thursday: REM and Radio Free Europe (1981)

This track seems appropriate given that the Trump administration is taking a hatchet to certain parts of the broadcasting world, including Voice of America and NPR radio. Soft power? Hand it over to China.

Radio Free Europe was REM’s debut single. It came in two forms: a seven-inch on a label called Hib-Tone, and then later on their first record for IRS. All these years later, there’s a third form. The band has released a remixed version with proceeds going to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty to help with the Trump cuts.
