Ongoing History Daily: This Ataris vinyl is illegal in some places

You gotta love how artists are looking for unique ways to make their vinyl releases collectible. Take the case of The Ataris, who released a physical version of a song called “Cars Song” back in May.

The limited-edition 7-inch single has something special mixed into the polyvinyl chloride: The ashes of lead singer Kris Roe’s late father, William Roe, who died in 2014 of complications related to alcoholism. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this record will be donated to a group called Shatterproof, which works with people struggling with addiction.

If that’s not enough, this record—which sold out immediately—is illegal in eight US states. In those states, it is illegal to sell human remains in any form, including those mixed into a vinyl record. For future reference, those states are Florida, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. Good to know.
