Hang on. This is the last week before Labour Day? Already? Time to jam in as much summertime as we can, including this highly curated selection of the Five Songs You Must Hear This Week.
1. Oasis, Slide Away (Live)
Single (Big Brother)
Recommended If You Like: The whole Oasis reunion tour
Usually, the live album comes after the tour is finished. But in the case of the Oasis reunion tour, they’re not waiting to release recordings from the gigs, sometimes with days of the show. You gotta be pretty tight and pretty confident to do something like this. Oasis has never been short of confidence, but their performances on this tour have been absolutely stellar. This recording was made at the very first show in Cardiff back on July 4. And remember: There were no warm-up gigs, no secret shows to work out the kinks. They just went onstage and blew everyone away.
2. Muse, Unravelling (Acoustic)
Single (Warner)
RIYL: Bands that don’t often play acoustic
Muse is laying the groundwork for a new, still-untitled album sometime later this year or in early 2026. On a festival swing this summer, they unveiled a song called Unravelling, which has now been released in an acoustic form. It’s rare that we get something from Muse that is this stripped-back.
3. BABYMETAL, My Queen (featuring Spiritbox)
Metal Forth (Capitol Records)
RIYL: The adorable side of J-metal
Japan’s metal moppets have a new record featuring a ton of guest appearances, including Tom Morello, Slaughter to Prevail, Poppy, and Canada’s Spiritbox. There is only one BABYMETAL. You must get with the program. Prepare to be assimilated.
4. Colony House, OK OK OK
77 (LastDaze Records)
RIYL: Righteous Irish Anger
This Tennessee band is having a moment, especially in Canada right now. This is their fifth album, and the current single sounds like it might mix well with the new Wet Leg album, although there are elements of U2 and Cold War Kids in what they do, too. There’s a Toronto date coming up October 4 with more Canadian shows to be announced soon.
5. Blonde Diamond, 2 Young 2 Die
Single (High Tide Records)
RIYL: West coast Cancon
Blonde Diamond is a four-piece Vancouver band that pairs well with bands like Dear Rouge, Phantogram, and Metric. Maybe you’ve already seen them open for Mother Mother, Portugal. The Man, and Bishop Briggs. Watch these people.
