The AC/DC Comeback That Saved 2020: “What Makes People Happy is the Music Itself”

When things got strange during the worldwide pandemic in 2020, AC/DC swept in with a new album to uplift fans. Power Up became a comeback with almost perfect timing.

Via Zoom, Brian Johnson says, “The wonderful fans who have been with us for forty years and beyond, they’re still there, ya know? And they drag other fans with them until it grows. It’s wonderful.”

This album was their 17th release, featuring 12 songs that rock as hard as ever. Johnson adds, “I think what makes people happy is the music itself. It’s so bloody honest… there’s no hidden message… it’s just honest.”

This was a time when people craved honesty and comfort, and being able to rock out at home to music from a band you’ve loved for forty years offered both solace and a sense of connection.

The one thing missing from this comeback was the ability to perform it live. AC/DC is known for their powerful stage presence, and they ached to give it as much as fans wanted to experience it. Cliff Williams says, “We’d love to go play some stuff…but we can’t…hopefully next year we can get back to some live stuff.”

The band didn’t get back on stage until 2024 and are still touring now, playing both their classics and this comfort-filled comeback of tunes.
