David Byrne back with Brian Eno? A co-write between two alt-rock stars from the 90s? Some Canadian cold wave? It’s all below for the latest Five Songs You Mus Hear This Week list.
1. David Byrne, T-Shirt
Single (Matador)
RIYL: Reunions
After being apart for too long, David Byrne and producer Brian Eno—the guy behind Talking Heads’ early 80s masterpieces—are back together with a new single that captures an old-school electro-pop feel. But this being David Byrne, there’s a message behind the humorous lyrics.
2. Brian Futter/Tanya Donelly, Good Day Father
Sonic Amadea (Independent)
Recommended If You Like: The idea of a Catherine Wheel/Belly collaboration
I’ve long hoped for a Catherine Wheel reunion, and although it’s been discussed (or so I’m told), it doesn’t look like we’ll get one anytime soon. We do, however, have this new collaboration between CW guitarist Brian Futter and Tanya Donnelly, who was both in Belly and The Breeders. This song comes from an EP due in February. The title comes from Brian’s son who uses this phrase to get dad off the phone.

3. TRAITRS, I Was Ill, You Were Wrong
Possessor (Independent)
RIYL: Canadian coldwave
TRAITRS is a duo from Toronto who have built an international following the hard way: by touring, touring, and touring. If you like your synths icy, then circle March 13 on your calendar to remind you that their new album will be out that day. Looking for some music to go along with your spiritual unease? Here you go. The full version of this song will be out Friday. Pretty Cure-like, if you ask me.
4. LYNKS, I Didn’t Come Here for Art
Single (Independent)
RIYL: Send-ups of artsy types
Lynks (they/them), the queer drag performer originally from Bristol, has come up with a biting electro-punk anthem directed at the too-cool-for-the-room kids at the club. I can hear the dance floor roaring already: “No more try-hard, spoken-word, art school shi*!” Love the sarcasm.
5. The Neighbourhood, Hula Girl
Ultrasound (Warner)
RIYL: Forgiveness?
California’s The Neighbourhood released their fifth album last week (November 14), looking to recover from an internal scandal where drummer Brandon Fried was booted from the band after being accused of sexual assault and then re-admitted to the group. (I’m sure there’s an interesting story there.) This single is one of the most-added at radio across North America over the last couple of weeks.
