New Music Friday: 6 songs for your weekend listening (21 Nov 2025)

We’re coming close to the end of fall release season for new singles and albums. As we get closer to Black Friday and Christmas, the focus will be on box sets and reissues. However, there’s still something to talk about for New Music Friday.

Singles

1. Almost Monday, Lost (Hollywood Records/Universal Music Canada)

Here’s a trio from San Diego who has made some decent progress over the last 18 months or so, performing at major festivals including two versions of Lollapalooza (Berlin and Paris), Pinkpop, and Outside Lands. The music video is a cheeky take on a Jason Bourne movie.

2. Big Wreck, Dog with a Gun (Sonic Unyon/Universal Music Canada)

Big Wreck’s The Rest of the Story album has been out for a couple of weeks now and the singles keep coming. This latest track ticks all the boxes: big riffs, big drums, big vocals. If you like what Queens of the Stone Age and Royal Blood are doing these days, it’s a must-listen.

3. The Lumineers, So Long (Dualtone/MNRK)

The Lumineers continue to mine tracks from the Automatic album, which was released back in February. They’ve also got this hour-long film about the things they’ve been doing this year. The tour for the album will go global in 2026.

Albums

1. The Pretty Reckless, Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas EP (Fearless Records/Concord)

I was absolutely buried with new Christmas releases this week, but 99.5% of them were aimed at country, AC, pop, or Christian audiences. In other words, none of them rocked–except this one from Taylor and The Pretty Wreckless. Listen, 25 years ago, she played Cindy Lou Who in the Jim Carrey version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, so it’s about time, you know?

2. The Rheostatics, Great Lakes Suite (Cordova Bay Records)

The Rheostatics’ welcome return features a tribute to the largest repositories of fresh water anywhere in the world. That’s a big project, so they enlisted some big help: Alex Lifeson, Laurie Anderson, Kevin Hearn of Barenaked Ladies, Tanya Tagaq, and, surprisingly, someone named Gord Downie.

3. The Salt Collective, A Brief History of Blindness (Propeller Sound Recordings)

This is the second album from Stéphane Schück, a French songwriter-guitarist who likes to bring in some international help. This record features Aimee Mann, Mike Mills of REM, Andy Partridge of XTC, and a bunch of others. It makes for some very interesting listening.
