Sum 41 began in the summer of 1996, between 10th and 11th grade. Thirty years ago.
At the time, the band wasn’t thinking about the future, but what they had felt like it would go on forever, however long that would be. In a 2022 interview, frontman Deryck Whibley reflects with wisdom, saying, “Mostly because you’re so young, you think everything lasts forever.”
They were 16 and knew they’d make it, fueled by the optimism and excitement of youth.
Today, the band is no longer active. In June 2024, they announced that they would disband following a farewell tour. In this interview, Deryck talks about Order in Decline, their final album together, and one of their final tours.
“Our show is a lot of energy,” Deryck says. “We always try to put on a show…it’s kind of like a little community because everyone sings along and everyone’s in like, a really good mood, it’s a really good vibe.”
Their shows wrapped up in January 2025. But the community and the energy he talks a but the community and the energy last forever.
