Five Songs You Must Hear This Week (19 Jan 2026)

Today (January 19, the third Monday of the year) is allegedly scientifically known as The Most Depressing Day of the Year. Let me help you through this with the Five Songs You Must Hear This Week list.

1. Meisha and the Spanks, Cut My Bangs
Single (ADA Canada)
Recommended If You Like: A much-needed haircut

Meisha Louis and Sean Hamilton are out of Calgary and have been releasing material for that laster few years. She is a mixed-Secwépemc artist living in Treaty 7 Territory. She calls Sean her “psychic counterpart.” Where have the riot grrrls gone? One of them is right here.

2. Ace of Wands, Edge of the Edge
Future Wave (Independent)
RIYL: Fuzziness

Ace of Wands is a Toronto trio who flirts with dream rock and the fuzzier side of things. Their latest is an album produced by Change of Heart’s Ian Blurton. Good video, too.

3. The Dandy Warhols, Kiss Off
Pin-Ups (Dine Alone)
RIYL: Following your idols

In 1973, David Bowie released Pin-Ups, an album full of his interpretations of his favourite. About 55 years later, The Dandy Warhols are doing the same thing, also with an album called Pin-Ups. They’ve reimagined The Cure, The Clash, Bob Dylan, The Runaways, The Beatles, and Gang of Four. To prime the pump, they’re offering this version of Kiss Off by the Violent Femmes. We’ll hear the rest on March 20.

4. Morrissey, Make-up Is a Lie
Make-Up is a Lie (Sire)
RIYL: Well, it’s Mozzer, innit?

Morrissey hasn’t released a new album in over five years, largely because (a) he keeps burning bridges with labels, (b) he prefers whining about the music industry and how underappreciated he is, or (c) because he needs a new record so he can go out on tour and cancel more than half the shows. If you picked (d), all of the above. You win. Unless things completely blow up—always a possibility with Morrissey—the album will be out March 6.

5. Dan Mangan, Melody
Making Natural Light (Arts & Crafts)
RIYL: Being out in the woods

Yes, this album has been out for nearly a year, but for many, it’s been a slow burner for most. Recorded in a cabin somewhere north of Peterborough (13 songs in six years) with his band, Dan considers this to be his best work yet. (He talks about it here.)
