Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry, episode 56: Stalkers and the Music Stars Who Fear Them

You’ve endured untold rides in a broken-down van, eaten way too much bad food, survived plenty of bad decisions, and navigated all the sharks that inhabit the record industry.

And here you are, in your palatial house with all the luxuries money can buy. You want for nothing—but you’re trapped, and you don’t feel safe.

When you become famous, the crazies come out. You’re harassed in a multitude of ways. Some of these fanatics believe they have a special connection to you. They think they know you, and they believe that you need to know them.

Many are mostly harmless, delusional people who don’t go beyond posting their obsessions about you online. You might get some letters in the mail, and when you go out in public, a few may linger a little too long and a little too closely.

But you can’t take chances. Maybe you have a bodyguard or two accompany you whenever you leave the house, just in case.

Then there are the more extreme situations. A few have found your personal email address and keep sending you messages. Others DM you constantly on social media. And then there are the stans who show up everywhere, including your house.

You need security systems—lots of cameras. Maybe a couple of big dogs. Maybe a panic room. And you’ve stashed a couple of guns around the house—again, just in case.

As rich and as successful as you are, part of your life is over, all because of these nutters out there who insist on getting to know you better, professing their undying, eternal love for you, passing along a message, trying to rip you off, or determined to cause you grave harm.

I’m AC, and this is episode 55 of Uncharted: Crime and Music in the Industry—and these are terrifying stories of musicians and the stalkers who stalk them.
