Nothing like pleasant surprises to perk things up on a cold winter day. The Five Songs You Must Hear list features not one but two such releases.
1. Beck, Can’t Help Falling in Love
Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime (Universal)
Recommended If You Like: Surprise albums
On Friday (January 30), Beck dropped a new album of covers and rarities online. The selection is eclectic with material from The Korgis, Caetano Veloso, Hank Williams, Daniel Johnson, and this song from, yes, Elvis. Everything is just digital for now, but a physical release is coming on February 13. This is soooo Beck.
Listen on Spotify.
2. The Cranberries, Uncertain
Uncertain EP (Island UMe)
RIYL: Music from DEEP in the vaults
Before The Cranberries broke out with Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can’t We in 1993, they recorded an EP entitled Uncertain in October 1991. This reissue-which I didn’t know was coming, so, surprise!–is known only to hardcore Cranberries fans as only 5,000 copies were produced and quickly disappeared once the band got big. Dolores O’Riordan was just 19 at the time, while the rest of the band was around the same age.
3. The Beaches, I Ran (So Far Away)
Single (AWAL)
RIYL: Cool Covers
“Wait,” I heard you say, “Is this the same I Ran that A Flock of Seagulls did in 1982? Have The Beaches actually tackled this New Wave classic?” Why, yes. Yes, they did. Bold and fun at the same time. This is gonna go over well live. Swoopy haircuts not included.
4. Courtney Barnett, Site Unseen feat, Waxahatchee
Creature of Habit (Matador)
RIYL: Slacker Rock
Courtney Barnett is one of my favourite Australian singers from the last ten years. Her brand of slacker rock is just so appealing, so authentic, so self-deprecating, and so self-referential. Check out these lyrics: “Always getting in my own way / Is it too late to make any changes? / Letting go of everything that might’ve been / I know it seems a lot, it’s only for a year.” Yep. Kate Crutchfield of Waxahatchee joins her on this song. And you gotta love the video shot in Courtney’s new home of Los Angeles. Creature of Habit will be out soon.
Sevendust, Is This the Real You?
One (Napalm Records)
RIYL: Crunch
Atlanta’s Grammy Award-winning Sevendust is about to release their fifteenth album on May 1. The animated video features a dude with some scary powers. Keep away from him.
