There are no guarantees in the music business. At some point, the hits will stop coming, and fans will stop caring, so it’s best to have a backup plan. Roddy Bottum of Faith No More knew this way back in the 90s. As crazy and wild as Roddy can be, he does have a practical side.
When the band started making money, he was still living modestly in San Francisco and was still working as a bicycle messenger. His boyfriend, who was into investing at the time, convinced him to take a portion of his share from one tour—approximately $12,000—and invest it in a struggling tech company. It was in real bad shape, with its stock price hovering at an all-time low. But the boyfriend insisted, so he went ahead.
That initial $12,000 is now worth $7 million because the investment was in Apple.
