Five Songs You Must Hear This Week (13 April 2026)

Apologies for the absence of Five Songs You Must Hear lists over the last couple of weeks, but I was on the other side of the planet. Let me make it up to you.

1. Foo Fighters, Of All People
Your Favourite Toy (Roswell/RCA)
Recommended If You Like: Well, it’s the Foos, innit?

We’re less than two weeks away from the new Foo Fighters album (April 24), so here’s one more advance single. The word that seems to be coming up a lot in conjunction with this record is “unhinged.” This track, which might make you think of Husker Du, fits that description.

2. Arkells ft. Poolside, What’s On Your Mind
Between Us (Universal)
RIYL: Well, it’s Arkells, innit?

Arkells have a new album coming this month, too—Friday, in fact. And like so many Arkells singles, this is a collaboration. In this case, Poolside is a chillwave/nu-disco/synthpop from LA. The two groups met up when Poolside opened some shows on an Arkells tour.

3. The Strokes, Going Shopping
Reality Awaits (Cut Records/RCA)
RIYL: Well, it’s The Strokes, innit?

The Strokes have been AWAL for a while—the last album was The New Abnormal, which came out about a month after the world shut down for COVID in the spring of 2020. This is their seventh album and first to be produced by Rick Rubin. Everything was apparently recorded in Costa Rica, too.

4. Social Distortion, Partners in Crime
Born to Kill (Epitaph)
RIYL: Well, it’s Social Distortion, innit?

Social Distortion has been MIA even longer than The Strokes, although for some serious health reasons. Leader Mike Ness was diagnosed with stage one tonsil cancer in 2023. Rehearsals and recording were suspended while Mike had surgery and spent time recovering. The good news is that he’s okay. He says this single is “about finding your voice,” something he means both literally and figuratively. The album will arrive on May 8 and will be the first Social D album in 15 years.

5. Rostam, Like a Spark
American Stories: A Concert Film (XL Recordings
RIYL: Well, Rostam is part of Vampire Weekend, innit?

This is the next best thing to a Vampire Weekend album. Rostam is working on a third solo album, which includes both new material and reimagined versions. Like a Spark, for example, is based on VW’s Young Lion. All these songs are part of a concert film recorded in Los Angeles.
