INXS vs Oasis: the 90s feud that spawned a hidden diss

This 90s alternative feud between Liam Gallgher of Oasis and Michael Hutchence resulted in a secret message being hidden in this band's lead single

After Oasis exploded in popularity in the mid-90s their larger-than-life personalities tended to cause some friction between them and other artists (and of course later on, between themselves).

Their biggest and most notable feud was likely the one with fellow Britpop band Blur but the rivalry between Liam Gallagher and Michael Hutchence of INXS was another major tiff.

Most of the snipes at each other were through comments in magazines, but there was a notable argument between the two at the 1995 MTV Europe Awards that involved the women each singer had been romantically involved with.

A year later at the 1996 Brit Awards Oasis won Video of the Year for “Wonderwall” and were presented the award by Hutchence himself, after which Noel Gallagher involved himself in the feud by saying “has-beens shouldn’t present awards to gonna-be’s”.

There were further spats that night, and apparently a fire extinguisher was thrown at one point.

A few months later Hutchence and U2 singer Bono were at a pub when Liam Gallagher walked in and another argument broke out, despite Bono’s best efforts to stop it. Hutchence left and afterwards returned to the studio where INXS had been recording their new album.

He secretly recorded new backing vocals for the chorus of the title track “Elegantly Wasted”, without telling his bandmates about the new lyrics.

Those lyrics? “I am better than Oasis”.
