Delta police have launched an investigation after receiving a report that a suspected recording device was being used in a staff washroom at a business in the Tilbury area.
Global News has identified the business as a FedEx depot.
Police said that on July 7, an employee was arrested and released on conditions pending further investigation.
At this stage, investigators believe the incident was isolated to this workplace and there is no information to suggest a broader risk to the public, police said in a release.
Investigators are now working to secure evidence, identify anyone who may have been affected and ensure there is no ongoing risk.
Due to the highly sensitive nature of the investigation and privacy concerns, police said they will not be releasing any further details at this time.
“As recording devices become increasingly small and accessible, Delta police encourage people to remain alert in locations where privacy is expected,” police said in a release.
“Any suspicious device or activity should be reported to police immediately.”
In a statement to Global News, FedEx stated that its first concern continues to be the well-being of the women affected by this crime.
“Upon learning of the situation, we acted immediately, including cooperating with law enforcement, terminating the employment of the individual responsible, strengthening security, and providing counseling and support resources for our team members,” the statement read.
“We recognize that the impact of an incident like this can be profound and long-lasting, and we are committed to supporting those affected every step of the way. We believe every woman who experiences violence or abuse should have a voice.”
The company said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement in its investigation.
Gurpreet Kaur, founder of the Kaur Movement Foundation, which helps survivors of sexual and domestic abuse, told Global News that she received a call on Thursday saying that four to five women wanted to meet at the office immediately.
She said two men came with them and told her their account of what has been happening at the FedEx depot.
“I saw pretty much all the videos on the porn website,” Kaur said.
“It was just so scary because it was so high definition, and not only that, it’s from top to bottom,” she added.
“Like it’s the full face is being shown, everything’s being shown. So let’s just say the woman is changing her tampon. That you can see as well. Yeah. So it was really like sad to see, upsetting to see, especially the victims are sitting there in front of me.”
Kaur said the victims told her they have reported the suspect before, but no action was taken. She said seven people reported seeing him going in and out of the women’s washroom.
She added that the first complaints date back two years.
“It’s just sad that nothing was taken seriously, and this was all preventable,” Kaur said.
“Currently, the videos are not online. They have been removed. Luckily, that’s a good thing. But so many recordings have been made. I feel like the management could have done better with coming forward with this news to the victims.”
