This week’s Five Song You Must Hear list continues some noise, a few big riffs, and a song with a chorus that will live in your head until final proton decay of the universe.
1. The Twilight Sad, Attempt a Crash Landing – Theme

The Twilight Sad is a post-punk/post-punk band from rural Scotland that has been making music since 2003. They describe their sound as “folk with layers of noise,” which I’m quite sure it does them justice. Whatever you want to call it, I love this track, which starts out something like Snow Patrol. Then…BOOM! Close your eyes and float on. Fantastic.
2. Mike D, Crypto
Thank You (Capitol)

Momentum continues to build for the release of Mike D’s solo album, Thank You, which will be here on August 28. This is the four advance single and one that contemplates the avarice and greed that surrounds the whole crypto scene. This is pretty punky stuff, when you think about it. Good one, Mike.
3. Phoebe Bridgers, Lost Boys

For the last three nights, I’ve awakened in the middle of the night with the chorus of this song running through my head. I have no explanation for it other than Phoebe has created a hook for the ages. The full album (with 16 tracks!) will be here on August 14 and will no doubt contain more of the same. And yes, Phoebe, the machine is killing me, too.
4. Tommy Barlow, Won’t You Ever Need Me
Single (Independent)
RIYL: Gut-wrenching vocals
This song began as an iPhone recording made while Barlow plunked away on the piano at his parents’ house. Then he went back to his home in North London and worked it out in his studio. This is the kind of vocal performance we rarely hear these days. Anyone else feel a little Tom Waits here?

Some riffy rock is coming this fall with this new TOAD EP (due September 4) that implies there will be a part two to whatever this project is all about. So what’s this single about? Frontman Tyler Connolly says, ““We’ve all had that person that we wish would go away or just crawl up and die. That’s the anthem here with Funeral Song.” Yeah, I think we can relate.
