Given the complexity of life today, it’s easy to fall into these rabbit holes. Humans naturally look for patterns in their existence. If we see something, we instinctively look for connections and causes. We want an explanation for all the chaos. Random occurrences? There’s no such thing. Complexity leads to a crisis of control. We want to be in control of our lives, not led somewhere against our will. If we’re feeling powerless, anxious, and confused, we’re more likely to seek out any explanation for why things are the way they are. These explanations reduce complexity to simplicity. There’s a growing distrust of institutions: government, religion, corporations, and even supposed evil cabals of billionaires. They’ve got to be out to get us. Conspiracy theories give us a sense of comfort, belonging, security, and the idea that we possess secret knowledge of which the rest of the “sheeple” are blissfully unaware. It’s not your imagination, either. There are more conspiracy theories than ever. The internet has given voice to thousands of them, allowing these ideas to spread farther and faster than ever before. The world of music is not immune to any of this, either. Conspiratorial thinking is everywhere, even in places where you might not expect to find it.
