Taylor Momsen says the music she makes is first and foremost for herself. But seeing it take on a life of its own after it’s released is one of the most rewarding parts of being an artist.
“To see the reaction and to see it you know, kinda spread its own wings and have people connect to it and emotionally relate and all of those things, and see it really effect people is just the most rewarding, highest compliment you can get as an artist.”
This summer, The Pretty Reckless released their fifth studio album, Dear God, giving fans another deeply personal collection of songs to connect with. The album’s lead single, “For I Am Death,” helped the band repeat their streak, earning them a fourth consecutive No. 1’s on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Momsen describes the record as “very honest, very blunt,” explaining that while the band has always written candidly, they’ve never embraced this level of directness before.
For Momsen, songwriting has been an outlet for self-expression since she was a child. Today, it’s much more than a creative process – it’s how she works through life.
And if fans find pieces of their own stories in those songs along the way, that’s simply the greatest reward an artist can hope for.
