This week’s Five Songs You Must Hear list starts mellow but gets pretty heavy in the middle. Prepare yourself.
1. The Head and the Heart, The Swimming Song

The Seattle indie-folk band wants us to get the most out of this season with their cover of a track by Loundon Wainwright III. “We hope it finds its way into your own summer soundtrack for all the swims, the long drives, and the memory-making days near whatever body of water feels like home.” A cottage song, then?
2. Kathleen Hannah and Ad-Rock, Let Me Love You

Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz of The Beastie Boys) and his wife, riot grrrl hero Kathleen Hannah have, yes, covered a song by Justine Bieber and DJ Snake. This is the first single from an upcoming benefit album that has a few things to say about the way ICE is conducting immigration raids in the US. The record will also feature contributions from Money Mark, Fred Armisen, Jello Biafra, David J (Love and Rockets), and Tom Morello. It will be out October 3, just as the US midterm elections heat up.
3. Ministry, We Hate

Now let’s really turn it up. Uncle Al Jourgensen has been talking about quitting for years. This time, though, he says, “I’m f**king done.” This will be the last Ministry album followed by what is probably the last Ministry tour. When the record arrives on October 30 (just in time for Halloween), it will be available digitally, as a CD, vinyl, a box set, and even on cassette. We Hate is the second taste of the record. Republicans will not like it. Nope. Not one bit.
4. Rob Zombie, Black Rat Coffin
The Great Satan (Nuclear Blast)

More hard’n’heavy goodness. The latest single from Rob Zombie’s eighth album, which arrived back in February. Since then, he’s been on tour playing sold-out shows with Marilyn Manson. If you’ve missed the album so far, it has been described it this way: “Revisiting his early Hellbilly roots for a slaughterhouse of anthemic punk-infused heavy rock/metal.” Good Saturday night stuff, this.
5. Nickelback, Leave Me Behind
Everything Under the Sun (Virgin Music Group)
RIYL: Songs that express vulnerability.
The third advance single from the new album (due October 30) and slows things down to power ballad levels. “Vulnerability” and “Nickelback” aren’t often used in the same sentence, but it applies to this song. If you’ve made it through some dark moments, you might find some solace here.
