If you’re a musician, you’ll know that the most iconic microphone used in live settings is the Shure SM58.
Even if you’re a non-musician, you’ll recognize it: a steel mesh ball topping a tapered black handle. It has been in continuous production since 1966 and has been used by everyone from the biggest rock stars to the newest indie bands to heads of state and popes.
Why has the SM58 lasted so long? Because they are so damn tough. You really, REALLY have to work at breaking one. It feels good in the hand. It’s stable in any kind of mic stand. It can be used for everything from vocals to guitar amps to drums. The SM58 just works. It’s also an example of excellent consistent branding, right down to its shape. The SM58 is as recognizable as a Coke bottle.
The next time you go to a gig, look for an SM58. I guarantee you’ll see one, if not half a dozen, on stage.
