Ongoing History Daily: Another look at weird genres (part 1)
Corus Radio
From the moment rock’n’roll was born in the 1950s, it has evolved, mutated, segmented, and stratified as people all over the planet put their own spin on it. Now there are eleventy billion different genres of rock.
Let’s look at metal, for example. It was born in the late 1960s and has undergone tremendous changes. Here are some of the sounds we have today. Atmospheric black metal: Heavy stuff with added layers of ambient sounds to create a thick, immersive effect.
Cybergrind: Insane drum machines garnished with glitchy noise. Electronicore: Metalcore (a subgenre itself) with plenty deep based mixed with poppy melodies. Funeral doom: Slow, dark, and suitable for the most sombre of burials. Goregrind and gorenoise: Disturbing stuff for people who think death metal sounds too much like pop music.
More next time.
