Scott Gillingham has been re-elected as the mayor of Winnipeg.

Gillingham defeated 11 other candidates who were vying for his position in the Manitoba capital Wednesday. According to the city’s unofficial results, Gillingham received roughly 40 per cent of the vote, followed by former Progressive Conservative MLA Kevin Klein and political newcomer Noah Redden, each with around 20 per cent of the vote.

The mayoral projection came roughly 50 minutes after polls closed in the city.

Gillingham celebrated his win with supporters at the Birchwood Inn.

“I still believe our city’s best days are ahead of us. We’ve accomplished a lot over the last four years, but there’s still so much more that we need to do,” he said, speaking alongside his wife, Marla Gillingham.

Gillingham was first elected mayor in 2022 after serving two terms as a city councillor.

As mayor, Gillingham led city council through the reopening of the Portage Avenue and Main Street intersection to pedestrians, the start of upgrades at the North End Wastewater Treatment Plant and an overhaul of the Winnipeg Transit system.

While seeking re-election, he told voters he would address community safety, in part, by establishing the Winnipeg Community Crisis Response team as an alternative for 911 calls regarding mental health or addictions, specifically for when the caller does not pose a danger to themselves or others.

Gillingham also pledged to ensure the continuation of a joint project between the Winnipeg Police Service and community organizations to tackle open drug use in problem areas.

Speaking to people who did not vote for him, Gillingham said he could empathize with why they felt the city needed a change.

“I know that people are worried about crime in in their neighbourhoods, people struggling with homelessness and addiction, mental health,” Gillingham said, adding that he will work to resolve those concerns.

“Whether you voted for me or not, I want you to know I will be your mayor too. My door will be open. Your voice will matter.”

Klein concedes

Speaking to supporters at his election night headquarters, Klein said he called Gillingham to offer his congratulations.

“It’s very hard to beat an incumbent,” Klein said, joined by his wife, Heather Klein.

“I see a bright future for Winnipeg. And I hope we can all work together to have that bright future for our children and our grandchildren,” he continued.

The former cabinet minister said he hopes some of his team’s ideas will resonate as Gillingham enters his second mayoral term.

Klein ended his speech by thanking the Winnipeggers who voted for him.

Four incumbent councillors defeated

Councillors seeking re-election in Old Kildonan, St. James, Transcona and Mynarski were defeated. There will be nine new faces joining Winnipeg city council.

Loren Remillard, president and CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, said Wednesday’s results point to an appetite for change in the city.

“(Winnipeg residents) looked at council as a whole and recognized that there’s 16 people around that table that need to lead our city,” he told 680 CJOB.

“I think what citizens are really saying is ‘We want more than just the same people pitching tired, recycled, old ideas.’

“There’s an appetite for some pretty big swings because the problems facing our community, be it municipal, provincial or federal, these are big.”
