Daughter of late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain and Hole front woman Courtney Love, Frances Bean Cobain may be following in her parents footsteps, as she sampled her very first song on Instagram today. In the past, she has covered such artists as Leonard Cohen and Jimmy Eat World a capella-style, but today she shared something more personal. The clip shows her singing her original lyrics,
“I think I saw you when I was small/ I think I found you/ A penny for your good thoughts/ I think I found you/Jesus hangs in your place on the cross/ All these hinges become unscrewed/ Heaven knows it was a cage on earth.”
Frances later revealed more of her lyrics in a comment to fans.
“Stable sable sold her heart/ No one asks her why she hides in a basket in her house in a box/ Find a fiend who reigns supreme in May/ Fast enough for blooming buds to lay their egg.”
The song which she says, “doesn’t have a title yet because it’s still a baby song,” marks the anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death on April 5th, 1994. Frances has said in the past that she’s not a fan of Nirvana’s music or the grunge scene, so we can’t expect her music to reflect that of her father’s. However, in an interview a few years back with Rolling Stone, she spoke about Kurt.
“He’s larger than life. And our culture is obsessed with dead musicians. We love to put them on a pedestal.” … “If Kurt had just been another guy who abandoned his family in the most awful way possible…but he wasn’t.”
We should expect that Frances would see the ‘late great Kurt Cobain’ in a different light than his fans would. And posting the clip on the anniversary of his death on top of her first set of lyrics make it seem like she wrote song about him. But who really knows?
She deleted the Instagram video but you can still watch a copy from her Facebook page.
The original caption to her post read,
“A) there are so many memeable moments in this clip B) I’m SUPER restless because i can’t play guitar with long nails so I’m just sitting in my room alone singin to mah self C) not having a TV in my house is the best decision because I’m forced to occupy my time with things that feed my brain & soul instead of wasting energy on thinking about not having to think.”
So what do you think? Is she going to share some finished tracks – maybe even an album? Do you think Frances will be able to release music without being blocked by her parent’s shadow? I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out…
