Celebrating over 40 years of friendship, Peter Frampton and Steve Miller brought their acts to Budweiser Stage for a night of 70’s classics and even a few new tunes for good measure. Exhibiting their classic guitars (and of course how well they can play them), the men kept spirits high as the oh-so-unpredictable Toronto weather tried its best to dampen the evening (literally). Frampton didn’t hesitate to get the ball rolling with upbeat hits like “Show Me The Way”, but was sure to take a moment to pay tribute to another long time friend – the late Chris Cornell – with a heartfelt cover of Soundgarden‘s “Black Hole Sun”.
Full of bright colours and magical images, Steve Miller Band hit the stage next and took Toronto straight to “Swingtown”. Casting a spell on the audience with hits like “Abracadabra”, the night took a blues-y turn when Miller brought Frampton back out to chat about the beginnings of their friendship and play a few choice covers.
Before closing out the night though, Miller and his band took Toronto on quite the journey, “Going to the Country” for some “Wild Mountain Honey” before fly(ing) like an eagle straight up to outer space where he transformed from just a “Space Cowboy” to a gangster of love for mega-hit, “The Joker”.
With wind and rain terrorizing the world around them, those lucky enough to be inside the venue could not have cared less, as this classic rock double bill made braving the conditions more than worthwhile. A friendship built on music, the bond between the acts was clear and the good vibes were infectious as the crowd danced, danced, danced the night away.
