Ongoing History Daily: Day jobs rock stars had before they became famous

Few people step into the role of rock stars without having to work at day jobs first.

  • Chris Cornell, for example, had a job at a seafood company where he—and I quote—“wipe up the slime and throw away the fish guts.”
  • Lemmy of Motorhead worked as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix.
  • Corey Taylor of Slipknot was in retail. He was a sales associate at a porn store. Most of the lyrics for Slipknot’s debut album were written there.
  • Kurt Cobain, Noodles of The Offspring, and Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach all had gigs as janitors.
  • Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington put in time working at a Burger King.
  • Joe Hahn, also from Linkin Park, helped with storyboards for episodes of The X-Files.
  • Rob Zombie was a production assistant on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse
